    08 / Student Competition

    Student Competition 2027

Showcase your research and RFID designs at IEEE RFID-TA 2027 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, on 20–22 September 2027.

    Best Student Paper Award

Papers led by full-time students are eligible. The lead author must have been a full-time student both when the research was conducted and when the paper is submitted, and must present the paper personally at the conference. Papers follow the same review process as other conference contributions.

    Best Conference Paper Award

All conference papers are considered. The award recognises outstanding technical quality, originality and presentation among accepted papers presented at IEEE RFID-TA 2027.

    Student Design Competition

    Purpose

    • Encourage students to pursue research and development in RFID technology and applications.
    • Demonstrate what RFID systems can achieve and support their practical adoption.

    Participants

    • Teams may comprise undergraduate and/or graduate students registered at an educational institution through July 2027.
    • Faculty and staff may advise teams, but may not directly design or implement the entry.

    Competition procedure

    • Round 1 — Initial design report: submitted project reports are evaluated to select finalists.
    • Round 2 — On-site demonstration: shortlisted teams demonstrate their prototypes at IEEE RFID-TA 2027 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

    Competition topics

There are three independent technical topics. A team may enter one or more topics if it meets the requirements of each selected topic.

    Topic 1 / High-efficiency rectenna

Design and optimise an 868 MHz rectifying antenna for a specified footprint and fixed load conditions, maximising RF-to-DC conversion efficiency.

Topic 2 / Backscatter RF front end

Design, fabricate and test an antenna with a binary backscatter modulator using BASK or BPSK. Optimise sensitivity and power consumption in the UHF RFID band. Evaluation uses an 868 MHz continuous-wave signal.

Topic 3 / Inductive wireless power transfer

Design, fabricate and test a near-field inductive receiver at 13.56 MHz, comprising a receiving coil, matching network and rectifier. Optimise transferred power and DC output under controlled magnetic-field excitation.

The 2027 technical requirement documents for all three topics will be announced. Please use the published 2027 specifications when preparing your entry.

    Device evaluation

Performance balances prototype dimensions, sensitivity and power consumption under the specified excitation conditions. Designs achieving the highest figure of merit (FOM) are the winners within the applicable topic.

    FOM = P × [50 cm³ / (D1 × D2 × D3)] × [10 g / weight]

D1, D2 and D3 are the dimensions, in centimetres, of the box enclosing the prototype. Weight is measured in grams. The definition of P depends on the topic and must be taken from its technical requirements.

    Initial project report

    • Maximum 10 pages, excluding appendices, in a single-column technical report format.
    • Cite literature and borrowed ideas using IEEE referencing.
    • Include an introduction, project objectives, design concept, results with a photograph of the preliminary device under test (DUT), conclusion and references.
    • Each missing required section incurs a 15% penalty.
    • Appendices may contain supporting standards or component tables, but must not hold the core design or results.

    Double-blind review

    • The report must contain only the project title, with no student names, university affiliations or other identifying information.
    • Submit author details in a separate file.
    • Entries whose reports reveal team or institution identities will be disqualified.

    Practical demonstration in Kuala Lumpur

    • Finalists must prepare a video of no more than 10 minutes explaining and demonstrating the system.
    • Show the measurement setup, DUT and output measurement points clearly enough to verify operation.
    • Show relevant power, voltage and/or current at the transmitter or excitation source and receiver or load, before and after coupling or operation.
    • Only teams selected in Round 1 may demonstrate at the conference.
    • Demonstrations take place at IEEE RFID-TA 2027, Berjaya Times Square Hotel, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, 20–22 September 2027.
    • Bring the DUT for testing. It must match the design demonstrated in the video.
    • Prepare a poster explaining the design; poster specifications will be announced.
    • At least one student from each team must attend the practical demonstration.

    Assessment criteria

A panel of at least three experts from academia and industry evaluates the final entries:

    • Novelty — 20%: relevance, motivation and societal or industrial impact.
    • Correctness and theoretical soundness — 20%: clear concepts and a sound method.
    • Results and performance — 40%: achieved performance and technical execution.
    • Potential for an impressive live demonstration — 20%.

    Awards

    • All teams advancing to Round 2 receive a certificate of participation.
    • Up to ten teams each receive one student conference registration waiver.
    • Prizes are awarded to the best-performing teams at IEEE RFID-TA 2027.
    • Prize details and waiver arrangements will be announced.

    Timeline

    • Initial design report deadline — To be announced.
    • Finalist notification — To be announced.
    • Video submission deadline — To be announced.
    • On-site demonstrations — 20–22 September 2027, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

    Submission & enquiries

The dedicated 2027 submission email or portal will be announced. Submit the project report with team details in a separate file, and include the full names of all members and their university affiliations in the submission message, not in the anonymous report.

If an acknowledgement is not received, contact the organising team. For enquiries while the competition channel is being finalised, email cclim@unimap.edu.my.
